Subcutaneous Immunoglobulin (SCIg) infusions are administered by slowly injecting purified immunoglobulin into fatty tissue underneath the skin. SCIg can be administered at home by patients or carers, using an infusion pump (spring loaded or battery powered) or by rapid push (a manual method that does not require a pump).
Subcutaneous injection of immune proteins is well tolerated and safe, and is clinically suitable for all patients. Subcutaneous immunoglobulin is superior to intravenous immunoglobulin because it does not require intravenous access and reduces the need for prodrug therapy with glucocorticoids and antihistamines. In July 2019, Shire (Baxalta) announced that Xembify has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This is a new 20% subcutaneous immunoglobulin product for the treatment of patients with idiopathic immunodeficiency 2 years and older.
