Nitrous oxide, with the chemical formula N₂O, is an inorganic substance that can support combustion under certain conditions (similar to oxygen, as it can decompose into nitrogen and oxygen at high temperatures) but is stable at room temperature. It has strong oxidizing properties at high temperatures and can explode when in contact with organic and flammable substances such as acetylene and methane.
Nitrous oxide has a slight anesthetic effect and can cause laughter, hence it is also known as "laughing gas". It was once used as an anesthetic in medicine, but due to its inferior anesthetic effect and significant side effects compared to other anesthetics, it has now been phased out.
